Your booking reference appears in four main places: (1) Your booking confirmation email — usually at the top, labelled "Booking Reference", "PNR", or "Confirmation Code". (2) Your e-ticket or itinerary document. (3) The airline's website or app under "Manage Booking". (4) Your paper or digital boarding pass — printed near the passenger name or barcode area.

What format is a booking reference?

Booking references are always 6 characters long and consist of uppercase letters and numbers (e.g., X7KL29, ABCD12, TMW345). They never include the letters O or I (which look like 0 and 1), to avoid confusion. Indian airlines like IndiGo and Air India follow this same global standard. The code is not case-sensitive — you can enter it in lower or upper case.

Is a booking reference the same as a ticket number?

No. A booking reference (PNR) identifies your reservation and is shared for an entire itinerary. A ticket number is longer (13 digits) and is specific to an individual passenger's issued ticket. Booking references are more commonly used for flight tracking because they are shorter and easier to enter. TrackMyWings supports both formats.

Why can't I track my flight by booking reference yet?

Booking reference tracking is a feature currently in development for the TrackMyWings app. In the meantime, you can track any flight by entering the flight number directly (e.g., "6E 101" or "AI 302"). A booking reference — also called a PNR (Passenger Name Record) or confirmation code — is a unique 6-character alphanumeric code assigned to your reservation the moment you book a flight. It appears in your confirmation email and boarding pass, and links your entire itinerary together in the airline's system.

Airlines and travel platforms worldwide use the same format: 6 characters, letters and numbers only (no O or I to avoid confusion with 0 and 1). Whether you booked directly with IndiGo, through MakeMyTrip, or via a travel agent, you have a booking reference.
