Flight Tracking

ZRH to LAX: Zurich to Los Angeles Flight Status

TrackMyWings Team6 min read

Searching zurich to lax flight status usually means one of two things: you want to know if the non-stop is running today, or you are already watching a specific flight number and want the board that tells you the truth about it. This page answers the first with pointers to the two airports' own tools, answers a related question, how far the two cities actually are, with a number we compute ourselves, and covers what ADS-B tracking can and cannot show once the aircraft is over the North Atlantic.

Is there a non-stop from Zurich to Los Angeles today?

Both ends of the route publish their own answer, and it moves faster than any static page can.

Los Angeles International Airport's flight information sits with its own dedicated site rather than on the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) homepage: LAWA's own page, read on 2026-09-23, tells visitors directly, "Looking for passenger information including flight status, terminal info and more? Visit FlyLAX.com". That is the tool to check who is flying into LAX today, and from where.

Zurich Airport runs the other end. Its site, read the same day, carries a "Find your flight" section with dedicated departures and arrivals pages, reachable from the front page's quick links. Between the two you can settle whether a non-stop is scheduled in your travel window, and who is operating it this month, in about a minute. That is a better source than a route snapshot for exactly the fields that change from one schedule season to the next: which carrier, how often, and what time.

Our ZRH to LAX route page is the place to come back to for the one fact on this pair that does not move with the schedule: the distance.

How far is ZRH to LAX, and why we don't print a flight time

The great-circle distance between Zurich Airport (ZRH) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is 9,535 km, or about 5,925 miles. We compute this ourselves, with a haversine calculation over the two airports' coordinates in our own bundled dataset (47.458056, 8.548056 for ZRH and 33.942501, -118.407997 for LAX), and the script that does it ships alongside this post. Great-circle distance is geometry: the shortest path across the surface of a sphere between two fixed points. It does not change with the season, the carrier, or the wind.

A flight time would be a different kind of number, and we don't print one. Block time on a sector this long is set by the routing air traffic control assigns on the day, by the winds aloft over the Atlantic and North America, and by which runway each airport is using when the aircraft arrives and departs. A single figure sitting in a blog post would be wrong on most days, and it would be wrong in a way nobody reading it could tell from the number alone. Your itinerary carries the airline's own scheduled block time for your specific flight, and that is the number worth planning around.

How to read ZRH to LAX status without guessing

Three sources, in the order that actually helps on the day.

  1. The operating airline's own status page, searched by your flight number rather than by the route. A flight number tells you the specific aircraft rotation; a route pair does not.
  2. The airport's own board. FlyLAX.com at the Los Angeles end, Zurich Airport's departures and arrivals pages at the other. Both are built to answer "is it on time" faster than a general search will.
  3. Our pages for the pair and its two endpoints, for the distance and the airport profiles: the ZRH to LAX route page, Zurich Airport (ZRH) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

What tracking shows over the North Atlantic

Community flight tracking, on any app that uses it, runs on ADS-B: an aircraft broadcasts its own position, and a ground receiver in range picks it up. Range is a physical constraint, not a design choice. The FAA's own ADS-B FAQ, answering exactly this question, puts it plainly: "the range would depend on your aircraft's altitude and any terrain that might block your line of site with the radio station", adding that "there are also practical limits due to transmitter power and receiver sensitivity."

That constraint is why a tracked position thins out and can stop mid-crossing on a long westbound leg like this one: ground receivers need ground under them, and stretches of open ocean simply have none nearby. A position that goes quiet somewhere over the Atlantic is out of a receiver's reach, not a sign that anything is wrong with the aircraft or the flight.

How TrackMyWings helps

TrackMyWings™ is a live flight-tracking platform in development, India-first in go-to-market with worldwide coverage as the aim. A private beta shipped on 2026-08-24: Android only, on the Google Play internal testing track, running on seeded rather than live data, with a small group of named testers. Public launch has no fixed date; it is gated on trade-mark clearance and on the app being good enough to earn the download. Once live data lands, this ZRH to LAX pair is one more route we intend to cover the same way we cover every other: geometry you can trust today, and status you check against the source that actually has it.

Questions people ask

Is there a direct flight from Zurich to Los Angeles? Check FlyLAX.com and Zurich Airport's own departures and arrivals pages for the current schedule; both change from one season to the next.

How far is Zurich from Los Angeles? About 9,535 km, or 5,925 miles, on the great circle, computed from airport coordinates rather than a booked routing.

Why doesn't this page list a flight time? Block time on a sector this long depends on routing and winds that vary day to day, so a single printed number would be wrong more often than it was right.

Can flight tracking apps see the aircraft the whole way from Zurich to LA? Community ADS-B tracking depends on ground receivers, which have no coverage over open ocean, so a position can go quiet mid-crossing and reappear once the aircraft is back in receiver range.

Does TrackMyWings track this route today? TrackMyWings™ is in a private, Android-only beta, with no fixed public launch date.
