Japan's Golden Week 2027: 29 April to 5 May

TrackMyWings Team8 min read

If you are planning Japan Golden Week 2027 flights, the dates are Thursday 29 April to Wednesday 5 May 2027, and the detail that matters most is the one ordinary workday in the middle: Friday 30 April. Take no leave and Golden Week is one holiday, a workday, then five days off. Take that Friday off and it becomes seven straight days. Which week most people choose decides when Narita, Haneda and Kansai are busiest.

The 2027 calendar, day by day

The Cabinet Office publishes Japan's national holidays. For 2027 it lists four holidays in this window: Showa Day on 29 April, Constitution Memorial Day on 3 May, Greenery Day on 4 May and Children's Day on 5 May (Cabinet Office, captured 2026-09-27). Laid against the weekdays, the week looks like this:

Date (2027)DayStatus
29 AprilThursdayShowa Day, national holiday
30 AprilFridayOrdinary workday: the bridge
1 MaySaturdayWeekend
2 MaySundayWeekend
3 MayMondayConstitution Memorial Day
4 MayTuesdayGreenery Day
5 MayWednesdayChildren's Day
6 MayThursdayOrdinary workday
7 MayFridayOrdinary workday

That gives three common shapes for a traveller's week:

  • No leave: a single day off on Thursday 29 April, back at work on Friday, then five days from Saturday 1 May to Wednesday 5 May.
  • One day of leave (30 April): seven consecutive days, Thursday 29 April to Wednesday 5 May.
  • Three days of leave (30 April, 6 and 7 May): eleven days, Thursday 29 April to Sunday 9 May.

Why 30 April stays a workday

The holiday law has two rules that can turn an ordinary day into a rest day. Neither applies in 2027.

The first is the substitute rule: when a national holiday falls on a Sunday, the nearest following day that is not a holiday becomes a rest day (National Holidays Act, Article 3, paragraph 2, via Cabinet Office, captured 2026-09-27). In 2027 none of the four holidays lands on a Sunday, so there is no substitute day, and Thursday 6 May is an ordinary workday.

The second is the sandwich rule: a day whose previous and following days are both national holidays becomes a rest day (Article 3, paragraph 3, same source). Friday 30 April follows Showa Day, but the day after it, Saturday 1 May, is a weekend rather than a national holiday. The sandwich does not close, so 30 April stays a working Friday.

Compare 2026, when Constitution Memorial Day fell on a Sunday and the Cabinet Office table lists Wednesday 6 May as a substitute rest day. That week ran as one holiday on Wednesday 29 April, two workdays, then five days off from Saturday 2 May. In 2027 the gap is one day instead of two, which makes the bridge cheaper to take.

What 2026 showed about bridging days

The 2026 figures show how travellers respond to a gap in the week. They are not a forecast for 2027, but the pattern carries.

Narita. Narita International Airport Corporation's estimate for a 17-day window, Friday 24 April to Sunday 10 May 2026, put international departures at 801,000 and international arrivals at 793,000 (Narita International Airport Corporation, news release of 22 April 2026, captured 2026-09-27). The three busiest international departure days were all before Golden Week had even started: Sunday 26 April at 56,900, Saturday 25 April at 55,800 and Friday 24 April at 55,700. The busiest international arrival day was Wednesday 6 May, the substitute holiday that closed the block, at 53,300, followed by Thursday 7 May at 52,200. Domestic departures, by contrast, peaked on Saturday 2 May at 11,800, the first day of the five-day run.

People flying abroad from Narita left the weekend before, which for most means taking the workdays in between as leave and turning the holiday into one long trip. People flying within Japan waited for the five-day block.

Kansai. Kansai Airports forecast a departure peak on Saturday 2 May 2026 at 37,700 and an arrival peak on Thursday 30 April at 34,700, across a window of 29 April to 10 May (Aviation Wire, 25 April 2026, captured 2026-09-27). An arrival peak on a working Thursday suggests that not all Golden Week traffic is residents leaving; visitors flying in travel on their own calendar.

ANA. ANA's results for 29 April to 6 May 2026 put its international peak for Japan-departing flights on 29 April and for overseas-departing flights on 5 May, with its domestic outbound peak on 2 May (ANA press release, 7 May 2026, captured 2026-09-27). Aviation Wire's summary of eleven domestic airlines' results that week credited the good alignment of the days in the second half of the holiday for strong travel (Aviation Wire, 7 May 2026, captured 2026-09-27). The Japanese word used there, hinarabi, means the way the days line up, and it is the whole story of this holiday.

Reading 2027 through the bridge

In 2027 one day of leave buys a seven-day week. No airport has published a 2027 estimate yet: in 2026 Narita's release was dated 22 April and Kansai's forecast was reported on 25 April, so the 2027 versions are worth looking for around the same point in April.

  • The one-leave-day traveller can leave on Thursday 29 April and return on Wednesday 5 May. That points to heavy outbound flying on the holiday itself and a concentrated return on 4 and 5 May.
  • The no-leave traveller leaves on Saturday 1 May and returns by 5 May. japan-guide.com expects 2027 travel to peak on 1 May out of the big cities and on 4 and 5 May in the other direction (japan-guide.com, captured 2026-09-27).
  • The long-trip traveller can leave the weekend of 24 and 25 April, or return on 8 and 9 May after taking 6 and 7 May off. In 2026 this group made the pre-holiday weekend Narita's busiest for international departures.

Flying into Japan rather than out, read the calendar in reverse: seats leaving Japan fill at the start, seats heading back fill at the end, and domestic flights around 1 to 5 May carry the no-leave crowd.

Tokyo and Osaka airports on the busy days

For Tokyo, the directory pages for Narita and Haneda list each airport's name and codes; for Osaka, Kansai is the airport behind the forecast above. Our directory of airports in Japan lists the others.

Narita's own advice for the 2026 period is practical and worth following in any year: allow at least two hours before your departure time, use public transport because on-airport parking was expected to be congested, and check its official notices for updates (Narita International Airport Corporation, captured 2026-09-27). The same notice named early morning and mid-afternoon into evening as the times international security queues were expected to be longest, with the exact hours varying by terminal. Treat that as a guide to how the day builds rather than a timetable for 2027.

For a sense of scale, the same release lists Narita's record international departure day as 28 April 2019, at 63,167 people.

How TrackMyWings helps

TrackMyWings™ is a live flight-tracking platform in development, built for the people waiting. A private beta has been running on Android since 2026-08-24, on the Play internal testing track, and there is no public launch date yet. Gate and status alerts and a shared family view are among the features planned for launch, meant for the person meeting a Golden Week arrival on the busiest day of the return wave. Until then, the directory pages for Narita, Haneda and Kansai are a starting point for each airport.

Questions people ask

What are the Golden Week 2027 dates? Thursday 29 April to Wednesday 5 May 2027. The national holidays are 29 April, 3 May, 4 May and 5 May, with Friday 30 April an ordinary workday and 1 and 2 May a weekend.

Is 30 April 2027 a holiday in Japan? No. It follows Showa Day, but the next day is a Saturday rather than a national holiday, so the rule that turns a day between two holidays into a rest day does not apply.

Which days are busiest for flights during Golden Week 2027? No airport has published a 2027 estimate yet. The calendar and japan-guide.com's expectation point to 1 May for leaving and 4 and 5 May for returning, with extra outbound traffic on 29 April from people who take 30 April off. Check Narita's and Kansai's own estimates when they appear in April.
