Flight Tracking

Home-Screen Widgets and Lock-Screen Glances for a Flight

TrackMyWings Team7 min read

Most people looking for a flight tracker widget Android can show on the home screen want one thing: a glance that replaces opening a tracker, finding the flight and waiting for it to load. A widget does that by putting one flight's times on your home screen. The lock screen does a related but different job: it carries notifications that stay pinned while something is in progress. Knowing which one refreshes when is what makes either useful on the day you fly or collect someone.

What a widget is on Android

Android's own developer documentation describes widgets as "at-a-glance" views of an app's most important data, placed on the home screen. It sorts them into types, and a flight widget is what Google calls an information widget: one that shows key information and tracks how it changes over time, like a weather or sports score widget. Tapping one normally opens the full view (Android Developers, "App widgets overview," captured 2026-09-27).

For a flight, the useful fields are few: flight number, scheduled and estimated departure, the gate once published, and a status word.

How to add a flight widget to an Android home screen

The steps come from Google's Android Help page and are the same for any widget (Android Help, "Add apps, shortcuts and widgets to your Home screens," captured 2026-09-27):

  1. On a home screen, touch and hold an empty space.
  2. Tap Widgets.
  3. Find the tracking app you use and tap it to see the widgets it offers.
  4. Touch and hold the widget you want, then slide it to where you want it and lift your finger.

To resize it, touch and hold the widget and lift your finger. If it can be resized, an outline with dots appears; drag the dots, then tap outside the widget.

Why a home-screen widget can trail the departures board

A widget is not a window onto a live screen. Android refreshes a widget on a schedule set by its developer, and the scheduled interval, set through a value called updatePeriodMillis, cannot be shorter than 30 minutes. Developers can refresh a widget by other means, but Google notes that similar power restrictions apply to those as well, because updating widget content costs battery (Android Developers, "Enhance your widget," captured 2026-09-27).

So a widget is best at slow-moving facts: the flight number, the scheduled time, a departure countdown. A gate change or a revised estimate can reach the airport screens first. Treat the widget as a reminder that the flight exists, and treat notifications as the thing that tells you it changed.

Lock-screen glances on Android: notifications that stay put

Android 16 introduced progress-centric notifications, built on a style called ProgressStyle, for journeys that run from start to end. Google lists rideshare, delivery and navigation as the key use cases and shows these notifications on the lock screen and in the notification shade (Android Developers, "Android 16 features and APIs," captured 2026-09-27).

Google's Live Updates guidance goes further. A qualifying ongoing notification is promoted to the lock screen, the top of the notification drawer and a chip in the status bar, and the person can still dismiss it or demote it to a standard notification (Android Developers, "Live Updates," captured 2026-09-27). A flight has the same shape as a delivery: a start, an end and a few milestones in between, such as boarding, pushback and landing. Whether a tracker uses this style is its developer's choice.

Two phone settings decide whether any of this reaches you: notifications have to be allowed for your tracker, and lock-screen notifications have to be set to show content rather than hide it. Both live in your phone's notification settings, though menu names vary by manufacturer.

Boarding passes in Google Wallet

If your airline issues a boarding pass you can save to Google Wallet, the pass itself can carry updates. Google's help page says supported passes, such as boarding passes, can show updates directly on the pass, with gate changes and landing statuses as examples (Google Wallet Help, "Save and use flight or event tickets," captured 2026-09-27). Support depends on the airline.

The iPhone side, briefly

Not everyone in a family uses the same kind of phone, so it helps to know the other platform's equivalents. On iPhone, the lock-screen surface is called a Live Activity. Apple's developer documentation says a Live Activity can be active for up to eight hours, after which the system ends it; it can then stay on the Lock Screen for up to four more hours, so twelve hours at most (Apple Developer, "Displaying live data with Live Activities," captured 2026-09-27). A long-haul flight plus the time at the airport can run past that window.

Home-screen widgets on iPhone refresh on a daily budget. Apple's documentation says a frequently viewed widget typically gets 40 to 70 refreshes a day, which works out to roughly every 15 to 60 minutes (Apple Developer, "Keeping a widget up to date," captured 2026-09-27). The lesson is the same on both platforms: widgets are for the glance, alerts are for the change.

A flight-day setup that works

  • The night before: add the flight in your tracker, place its widget on your first home screen and save the boarding pass to your wallet if the airline offers it.
  • Notifications: allow them for your tracker and your airline's own app, and set lock-screen notifications to show content.
  • At the airport: trust the departure screens and gate announcements over a widget whenever they disagree, since a widget may not have refreshed yet.
  • Collecting someone: a widget with the arrival estimate is a good glance while you get ready; an arrival alert is what should decide when you leave for the terminal at an airport like Kempegowda International in Bengaluru.

Where TrackMyWings fits

TrackMyWings™ is a flight-tracking platform in development. A private Android beta has been running on the Play internal testing track since 2026-08-24, and there is no public launch date yet. Gate and status alerts are planned features, described on our gate change alerts page, and our live flight tracking page describes the planned tracking experience. In the meantime, everything in this guide applies to whichever tracker you use.

Questions people ask

Why does my flight widget show an old time? Because widgets refresh on a schedule. On Android the scheduled refresh cannot be set shorter than 30 minutes, so open the full view or check your notifications when a time matters.

Can I see flight status on the Android lock screen without opening anything? Yes, through notifications. Ongoing notifications can sit on the lock screen, and on Android 16 progress-style notifications are designed for start-to-end journeys, where your tracker supports them.

Is a widget or an alert better for a gate change? An alert. A widget may not have refreshed yet when the gate changes; a notification is built to tell you something just happened.
